Looking good!
Speaking of Macs I was seriously thinking about buying this current gen macbook with the fixed keyboard but their announced transition to ARM made me seriously reconsider.
From the tech side they’re a solid platform and the seamlessness of parallels is a wonder when doing extremely techy stuff. Their planned abandoning of Intel though gives me serious pause to their support in the future.

I’m currently in a shitty keyboard Macbook Pro, and am also planning on waiting to see what ARM has in store. If it sucks, I’ll get a used Intel/updated keyboard MBP, if it’s awesome, I’ll scoop one up.

I thought about that too, but decided instead to grab the new iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Pencil. Had it for about two weeks. So far, so good.
I don’t think their processor switch will be a problem. They have a good roadmap, and it won’t leave anyone stranded all of a sudden if they buy an Intel Mac now. Most people I read holding off are thinking they other way, that they want to wait for the newer and faster.

I feel the same way, I want to get the Macbook Air that was released back in March but the ARM transition makes me want to wait.
They have a decent deal for free airpods (or the pro versions at a nice discount) if you buy a Macbook right now and my plan is to upgrade from my Android One phone at the end of the year to an iPhone (probably the 11 since I’d imagine the 12 will have been released by then). The deal looks really sweet but I don’t want to end up regretting buying an Intel Macbook that will be phased out quickly when many of my friends are still using Mac hardware that’s several years old.

One of my coworkers recently quit to do freelance so I got to inherit her 27" 2019 iMac. Huge upgrade over my old 27" 2013 iMac. I had been talking to my boss about buying me a new machine, and they agreed to go for the i9, since I do a lot of CAD and rendering, but since I got my coworker’s computer that’s off the table and I’m stuck with the base 6 core i5 (which is still much better than what I had).
This 2nd to last, and last gen iMacs really seem to have hit a stride. Even my 2013 wasn’t the worst thing to use, and could probobally still be used for a good long time. Mean while my 2o13 Dell died on me in 2018. Anecdotal of course, but there is something to be said for the longevity of these iMacs.

I have a 9.7 iPad pro and my wife has the 10.5 and they both get regular use but it doesn’t replace a laptop for me. It really does for her, she has that and a windows desktop.
I remember the transition to Intel for Macs and that went relatively well but that was move to a more universal platform from PPC where as I’m less convinced about ARM.
That being said I do use a lot of ARM chips and not just on my mobile devices, I’m a big Raspberry Pi/SBC nut and they’re capable but just less certain about using them for desktop oomph. I also had a Windows RT device and currently own an ARM linux laptop.
I don’t think the transition to ARM will matter for most casual users especially as most apps are Web based now but I do think it’ll hurt their abilities in the pro/tech space. To be fair it’s kind of a space they’d given up on for a while with the trashcan mac pro and meh macbook pros. They’re changing that but I’m having a hard time seeing ARM be an acceptable platform for tech folks.

I don’t actually like the truly wireless earbuds and apple headphones have never fit me well anyway. I’ve got a set of over the ear bluetooth sony headphones, wired Sennheiser phones and a pair of Sony corded bluetooth earbuds.
The thing is that Windows is running me off of wanting to use it as a desktop and the thought of migrating to a Mac is tempting vs running Ubuntu. I’m a systems engineer and linux has goods and bads but not really sure I want to daily drive it and am tempted to give MacOS a crack.

I bought my current thinkpad a year and a half ago and if the macbook had a decent keyboard I would have bought that.
The fact that they’ve fixed the keyboard temps me, but my laptop is still an 8th gen i7 so I don’t need a new laptop now...

I’ve never liked Apple earbuds as well, but my brother (whom I’ve gifted nice headphones before) really liked the noise cancellation and general functionality of the Pro model since these are in-ear models. Apparently they have a some problems common to other true wireless earbuds but at the discounted price I’m willing to give them a shot.
I have the XM10003s and they’ re the best overall headphone that I’ve ever used, but with the plan to change over to an iOS phone at the end of the year makes the airpod pros more enticing since I never carry my Sonys outside of the house unless I’m about to go on a flight.
I’ll keep my current 2014 era Windows PC going for gaming since it was upgraded with the 1660 Super but Apple is becoming more and more enticing, even though I fucking hate their upgrade and accessory pricing.

I thought about waiting, but everything I do now is in the Intel world so I didn’t think I’d be missing much. My current iMac is a 24" early 2009, 2.66 Core 2 , so I think I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of it. RustyVandura put a 512G SSD in it a couple of years ago, which has probably helped to keep it feeling a bit snappier. The screen is getting a bit yellow after all this time, and that was one of the reasons I wanted to make the move. This new iMac also has a 1080p camera in it, which will be great for online teaching this fall. So yes, I plan to deduct the hell out of this thing for my taxes.
The one I bought is the 27" with a 512G SSD. I had originally ordered the one with the 1TB fusion drive, but Apple announced new 2020 machines the day I placed my order (I didn’t know they were going to do that) and they canceled my order. As it is, I have a 2T mirrored network storage unit, and that’s where I keep all my files. That keeps the Mac running as lean as possible.
I haven’t been able to hook the new machine up yet because I’m copying things like my iTunes folder off of the old Mac onto the NAS so I can then copy them back. Or not. We’ll see. I’ll probably wait til tomorrow, because my iTunes folder is 73G.

My current iMac is a late 2009, 24". It’s served me well for all these years, and I put an SSD in it a couple of years ago which had helped it keep up. The screen is getting a bit yellow these days, though, and that was one of the reasons I wanted to pull the trigger on a new machine.

Nice! I can’t wait to get it turned on. I’m currently copying files off of the old machine to put back (or not) on the new one. Rather than restore from a backup, or migrate, I want to start fresh.

With a primary machine that old I’d also definitely upgrade now instead of waiting . A 1080 webcam is also really nice.

Thing is, it’s been working perfectly well for what I need. The only truly annoying thing is that I can’t upgrade the OS beyond 10.11.6, so I can’t use things like Air Drop. I’m still emailing files to myself from my phone. The funky screen colors are also affecting my photo processing. So yeah, I think 11 years is a damn good run for a computer. I hope the new one keeps going for as long.

I’ve got one too! Much older, a 2013 27”. I absolutely love it, it works great for me since I just use it for homework, web browsing, and occasionally minecraft

My old iMac is Late 2009, so 11 years is a good run. It’s still a good machine. I love the design and the size. With the new iMacs, the 21.5" is too small, while the 27" is maybe a tad too big, but there’s no way I was going to get a smaller screen. Specs on the larger one are also much better. Apple knows exactly what they are doing. They make the smaller machines just a tad too small, and make the upgrade to the larger machine seem reasonable. And everybody thinks they need bigger and better, so they invariably go large. I can’t wait to get it hooked up. Right now, I’m spending time transferring files to my network drive. iTunes is 73G, so it’s taking a while

I got the AirPods Pro. I wanted a nice pair of earphones with bone fide noise cancellation, but there was no way I would pay full price like my wife did for her Bose set. I don’t need them that much. $90 was doable though. And I needed to do something for the new work from home model. I need to bring my work desktops back eventually to my office, but I can no longer handle the homework from the family machine my wife uses for her work.
I’ll be honest, I’ve been waiting for something like the Scribble handwriting to text engine coming in iPad OS. It’s kind of the holy grail for me. I still do my first drafts and take notes by hand, and this may finally be the chance to build the work flow I truly want. If the iPad OS file system will do what I want that is.
I put Splashtop on the iPad so I can get onto my desktop from ab out if I need to. It’s a pain, so you don’t want to do that regularly. I’ll still leave the heavy scientific software for going into the office.

I think this transition will go even more smoothly and be better for users, because, although the new chips are ARM- based, they are designed by Apple. Apple will have tight control over their architecture and integration with the OS. There are some concerns about whether they will be powerful enough for the big guns, but I can’t believe Apple would be willing to chart a long term processor course that would hobble them.
But in the end, we just work with what is available now.

Just a note about the earbuds. I don’t really like putting things in my ears for any length of time , so I was skeptical about buying even high end ones. But so many reviews said these are surprisingly comfortable, and it turns out to be true for me. So I decided to keep them.
There is one design quirk that bugs me. The pressure sensors on the stalks can be set to trac k forward and back and enable or disable noise cancellation, but not to change volume. You adjust volume either with the volume controls on the phone to which it is paired or by saying “ Hey Siri” , which is slick and futuristic, but needlessly complicated and has an inherent delay. Everything else about the design is brilliant.

Yeah it'll probably be fine , but also lately their polish hasn’t been up to what it used to be.
I expected them to transition to AMD instead of Intel as they can to that without an architectural shift but didn’t see a transition to their own designed silicon.

Yep, that’s why I got the 27”. It was $15 more than the 21.5” so it was a no brainer to me

I got it last year, so very used but refurbished. The small was $150 pretty anywhere, ebay, FB, etc, but I won an auction on my 27” for $175, $210 shipped. Only thing that doesn’t work is the 3.5mm output for headphones, but it has Bluetooth so it’s not a big deal to me
